Getting to the gym regularly can be tough enough when you’re at home. Traveling can make it a lot harder to stay on track.
If you’re on vacation, workouts, in my opinion, are optional. Vacations are temporary and meant to be a break from the norm. It is totally fine to spend your time lounging on the beach and save exercise for when you get back.
Personally I look forward to working out on vacation; I use it as a chance to take new classes or try new things, and to hit the gym without a time crunch.
To each his own. Vacations are one thing.
But in this day and age, many people travel regularly for work or personal commitments. I have a number of clients who are constantly on the go.
This means workouts need to happen whether they are home or on the road.
It can be a struggle to get motivated to work out when traveling, and of course accommodations can add a challenge. Hotel gyms don’t always have much in the way of equipment. Sometimes where you’re staying, there is no gym.
But there is always something you can do. If the weather is cooperating you can take a walk or jog outside if you know the area (and it is safe to do so.)
A set of stairs either inside or outside (with not much foot traffic) is also a great tool for a workout. Give this stair workout a try!
There are, of course, other gyms and class studios in other cities you can check out. If you have a gym membership, see if there is a location in the city you’re visiting.
Many gyms also allow day or even week-long passes for a reasonable cost. (I’ve also managed to get in for free just by emailing and asking for the manager or owner.)
If all else fails, you can even workout right in your hotel room! Yes you can, I have done it and gotten a great workout too.
Check out this routine I did in a hotel room in Chicago.
This video here and this one here are both routines done in hotel gyms with just bodyweight or dumbbells.
There’s not really an excuse to miss workouts when you travel. If you get creative, don’t worry about who is looking and just move, you can stay on track anywhere!
