The holiday season is a time for giving but it can also be a time for gaining.
It is not uncommon to find oneself a few pounds heavier after the holidays. Not only are we keeping a busy social calendar with parties and get-togethers, but during this time of year delicious holiday treats abound and we are likely to be taking in hundreds more calories than usual.
Additionally, more chilly weather and less daylight has us spending additional time indoors and feeling less motivated. This combination of extra calories and less physical activity creates the perfect formula for unwanted weight gain.
The good news is there are things one can do to combat this holiday hangover. With just a little pre-planning and mindfulness you can keep winter weight off and get a head start on your 2018 health and fitness goals.
While many people will be joining gyms, or signing up with personal trainers come Jan. 1, December is actually a really good time to commit to a consistent workout routine. Whether it is signing up for a weekly fitness class, hiring a trainer or recruiting a friend for a workout, that accountability will get you moving when your warm, cozy couch is looking all too tempting.
Staying active is important, but we also need to be mindful of our eating this time of year. The office is going to be filled with goodies and it seems like cookies and treats are everywhere we turn. Although they are tempting, indulging in one or two sweets a day can add hundreds of calories to your weekly intake and you’ll likely see the scale go up.
